I came across a helpful post about girls like me who travel alone. Jonihayashi, an avid traveler, shares her 5 survival tips when traveling alone in 5 destinations: New York, In Chiba, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, and Brisbane.
Here’s what she wrote about NY:
In New York, USA (New York City)
Everyone tries to pick you up. You’re smaller than everyone else. So that makes you vulnerable. And hopefully naïve. Rule of thumb: Single or not, if it seems too fast, or too good to be true, it probably is. Note: I’m not into women, or a conservative spinster, but Sex and the City is NOT real-life.
Whenever I go to New York, I always try to go with a group of people. But sometimes I do travel alone and this happens not only at night, but possibly more in the daytime. Older men (think: 40+ years old) tend to come up to me and try to start a conversation. DO NOT REPLY BACK. I don’t even make eye contact. I just keep on walking to my destination and continue along my way.
Even my older sister (who’s actually an inch shorter than me–4′10″) got hit on right in Herald Square, a high traffic area, while dressed as Edward Scissorhands yesterday.
Anyways, check out the full article here. I haven’t been to any of the other places mentioned, so I can’t verify if these other tips are helpful. But what she wrote on NY–be advised!
